Read: 1 Samuel 26:8-25

Again, David has the perfect opportunity to do away with his pursuer. And again, he rejects the advice of his subordinates by sparing Saul’s life. Even though Saul’s heart is evil, David recognizes that Saul is the chosen of the Lord and, therefore, must be respected.

Prayer starter: Lord, enable our local, state and national leaders to serve those they represent and not their own self-interest. Amen.

Read: Psalm 78:1-8

Each one of us in the body of Christ is called to encourage others. This may be parents struggling with their newborn; visiting someone who is sick or mourning; helping a child who finds reading very difficult; just listening to a teen who feels the pressure of peers.

Prayer starter: God, bring to my mind one person to whom I could offer some encouragement. Amen.

Read: Isaiah 26:1-6

“Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on Thee,” reads verse three in the King James Version. The image of “stayed” is that of a tent rope that is tied to a long peg in the ground, securing a tent in the windy desert. Peace the result when we keep a solid focus on God.

Prayer starter: Lord, help me set aside all distraction so that I can be filled with Your peace as I focus on You. Amen.

Read: Mark 9:14-32

The father of this burned and broken boy is surprisingly honest about his lack of faith. Because he wants so much for Jesus to help his son, he could have been tempted to equivocate. Instead, Jesus honors his honesty with compassion and respect.

Prayer starter: God, thank You being patient with me when my faith wanes. Send Your Holy Spirit to strengthen my faith through Word and Sacraments. Amen.

Read: Romans 7:7-25

Paul was no stranger to the struggle against the sinful nature. He knew what it was like to want to do one thing and yet do another. On a daily basis we fall short of being who God wants us to be and of doing what God wants us to do.

Prayer starter: Lord, it is so frustrating. I want to do Your will but fail to do so regularly. Forgive me of my sins and give me faith to do Your will in my life. Amen.

Read: 1 John 3:11-24

Many people think they know something when in reality they only know about it. We know the love of Christ because He laid down His life for us. Knowing that love, according to John, is to share and show it to others.

Prayer starter: Lord, grant me the confidence to demonstrate Your love to others and then give me the chance to talk about the Person behind this love. Amen.
